What is Acupuncture & how does it work?
The western adaptation of acupuncture involves puncturing the skin with needles to stimulate nerves. The body then released natural substances that can be pain-relieving endorphins and encourage the body to heal itself. A medium-long term course of acupuncture is much more beneficial than a one-off treatment.
Acupuncture is originated from traditional Chinese medicine practices roughly 3,000 years ago. It’s practised in lots of NHS GP practices and pain management clinics throughout the UK. The belief is the body is filled with energy, known as “Qi” (pronounced Chee), and acupuncture encourages the natural flow of its Qi. It’s also believed that the body has 2,000+ acupuncture points connected by pathways.
How it works
The Acupuncture Procedure
In the traditional method of acupuncture involving needles, there are 3 stages involved:
1
Needle Insertion
Very thin needles are inserted to different depths of your body causing little discomfort. Most people don't feel them at all. Typically, treatment includes between 5 - 20 needles.
2
Needle Manipulation
In some cases, your practitioner may twirl or gently move the needle or administer a limited amount of heat or electrical pulses. This will depend on the type of pain being addressed.
3
Needle Removal
The standard time for the needles to be in place is 10-15 minutes before they are removed. Again, most people don't feel them when they're being removed as they're so thin.
